Gyms are trying to tailor to the mass market… people that like to yap their jaw by the water cooler or sit naked in the hot tub (yeah, it happens every day across thousands of locker rooms). When I first came across this research study, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Could someone REALLY increase their strength by up to 54% without ever touching a weight?

I stumbled upon a research study that was performed in 1988 in a laboratory in Paris, France. Researchers Thepaut-Mathieu, Van Hoecke and Maton wanted to understand if strength could increase by using a simple protocol of isometric exercises.

Isometric exercises are exercises where you don’t actually move the joint. Your muscle flexes but it stays in the same position. Other research studies have been performed and proven that isometrics are one of the best ways of rehabbing from an injury but could it develop strength?

The Paris scientists assembled a group of individuals to perform the experiment. Its important to note that these individuals were not athletes or in prime physical shape. They were “average” folks like you and me.

They had these individuals do a series of short isometric exercises for a total of 5 weeks.

After they completed the 5 weeks, they measured the results and were blown away that the participants increased their strength levels from 23% to up to 54%!

I knew I had to learn more so I dove deeper into the research and found another startling study on isometrics.

In 1984, there was a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology that tested isometrics versus dynamic training (movement). The study compared the effects of three months of moderate, isometric or dynamic exercises on the contractile properties of a certain muscle. (“Contractile properties” essentially means the amount of strength or force that the muscle can produce.) After the study had ended, the researchers found that both groups increased their muscle power but the isometrics group had a 51% increase compared to a 19% increase after doing dynamic exercises!!! That’s a HUGE difference!

My next question was, “Can isometrics actually build muscle too?”

I quickly found the answer.

In 1987, a study released in the Journal of Physiology showed that Isometrics not only affected strength but also size. The experiment also tested the results of isometric versus dynamic strength training. Researchers had the subjects perform a certain isometrics training program.

After the study was done, the researchers found two amazing results. The subjects increased the amount of muscular force (think strength and power) by 45% AND had a 5% growth in cross-sectional area of the muscle. This means that the exercises produced amazing gains in strength but also resulted in increased muscle mass.

This is great news for anyone looking to build an attractive muscular physique that is also functionally strong.

Isometrics are one of the most powerful methods of increasing strength and building lean muscle… and after I discovered these research studies… I had to learn more.

I found out that there are actually 3 types of isometric contractions and if you apply all three to your own program, your results go through the roof!

After spending months pouring over research, I discovered that there are 3 very different types of isometrics that I call the “Tri-Isometric Method”. When you apply all three of these unique methods you notice amazing changes in your body including… burning more fat, increasing total strength and the development of more lean muscle.

The first type of isometrics is called Static Contraction. During this type of contraction, your muscles squeeze but you don’t actually move or push against anything.

For example, flex your bicep as tightly as you can. Give it a good ‘ol squeeze.

You just did Static Contraction!

When you know the exact length of time to perform this contraction you’ll notice both strength and size improvements.

That’s the great thing about isometrics… you can do them literally anywhere and later on you’ll learn the short routine that will totally transform how you workout. And possibly the best part is that takes just a fraction of time compared to normal workouts.

The second type of isometric is Yielding contraction. This type of contraction is a bit different than Static Contraction because it helps you recruit even more muscle fibers inside your body (more later on why this is important).

When you recruit more muscle fibers you increase your strength much faster. Let’s use the typical push up as an example. When you normally do a push up you are only using a certain number of muscle fibers to complete the movement.

But when you apply the Yielding Contraction technique to your workouts you immediately recruit all of the fibers… that’s the real reason you can do these workouts faster… its because you get all the fibers to “fire” on command compared to most other workouts where it takes many repetitions to get to the point where your muscles fatigue.

The third method of isometric contraction (and maybe the most powerful on its own) is the Overcoming Contraction.

Remember, when I told you that the key to isometrics is recruiting all the muscle fibers?

This method achieves it and is defined as pushing against an immovable force.

One example is pushing against a wall. If you push against a wall with all of your might you feel every single muscle engage.

Compare that to doing a normal push up or even lifting a weight!

There really is no comparison!

You might be wondering, Isometrics sound amazing but how does it actually work? In order to understand it, you have to dive into a concept known as Maximal Voluntary Contraction. This is the greatest amount of tension a muscle can generate and hold for a certain period of time.

Your muscle is made up of many muscle fibers. See the image on the left. Normally, when you perform a certain movement you only use a few of these fibers. For example, when you pick up a glass of water from the table you recruit just a few fibers in your bicep (among other muscles) in order to perform the movement. Yet, if you were to pick up a bowling ball, your body would recruit even more muscle fibers to accomplish the movement.

When you do isometrics… especially the 3 different, unique methods of isometrics that you learned about above you recruit ALL of your muscle fibers. This is “Maximal Voluntary Contraction”. Think of it as a method of telling your body that it NEEDS to have all the fibers firing. When you do this… ALL of the fibers end up getting stronger… instead of just a certain number like with many traditional workout programs.

This allows you to get better results, in less time.
